CHAPTER 26

SHAKE A LEG

Paul Chapman and Pete Way did heroin in the late 1970s and ’80s, by their own admission. It has affected their memory. Some details simply cannot be extracted. As Chapman explains, “It was a fucking long time ago. The early ’80s was like a blur. Whatever I say, it’s only what I remember.” But on matters of import to Bon’s fate both have exceptionally good recall and tell substantially the same story, despite recounting events that happened nearly 40 years ago.

And one name sticks out: Joe Fury.

Chapman is adamant that he saw Bon the night before he died and spent the late evening of 18 February and early morning of 19 February 1980 with Joe waiting for Bon to return to his flat in Fulham with a supply of heroin. Bon never turned up and Joe left Chapman’s place just after dawn on the 19th.

Soon afterwards, Chapman says he was phoned by a distressed Joe to tell him that Bon was dead. The call was made some time between 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. and Way, independently of Chapman, vouches for it being true because soon afterwards he got a phone call from Chapman, asking for a phone number for either Angus or Malcolm Young.

“I can remember as plain as day what happened. I can remember as plain as day even the condition [Joe and I] were in,” says Chapman. “Prior to that, Joe worked for me for almost a year. He was my guitar tech for quite a long time and I used to go around Joe’s to score [heroin].”
